Ophthalmology/Macular Degeneration
Dr. Peter Campochiaro is a clinician-scientist who is the Eccles Professor of Ophthalmology and Neuroscience at the Wilmer Eye Institute at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine.
His areas of expertise include Diabetic Macular Edema, Diabetic Retinopathy, Macular Degeneration, Macular Disorders, Macular Holes, Macular Puckers, Medical Diseases of the Retina, Ophthalmology, Proliferative Vitreoretinopathy, Retinal Detachment, Retinal Specialist, Retinal Surgery, Retinal Vascular Disease, Retinal Vessel Occlusion, Surgical and Medical Diseases of the Retina, Surgical Diseases of the Retina, Vitreoretinal Diseases and Surgery Service.
Dr. Campochiaro has studied ocular neovascularization and excessive vascular leakage, which occurs in age-related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, and retinal vein occlusion. He utilized mouse models to define the molecular pathogenesis of ocular neovascularization and excessive vascular leakage, including the roles of VEGF, HIF-1, and Tie2. His clinical trial group demonstrated the benefits of inhibiting VEGF in Diabetic Macular Edema and Retinal Vein Occlusions. He helped develop strategies to provide sustained suppression of VEGF currently being evaluated in clinical trials. His laboratory also demonstrated oxidative damage contributes to cone cell death in retinitis pigmentosa, and this has also advanced to testing in clinical trials.
He received his medical degree from Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and has been in practice for more than 20 years.
